Update #4

1. Safety First -  All of you ride the road.  So we ask that you use your experience and common sense to have a fun a safe event with us.  Though you are competing, please observe the rules of the road.

2. Come kayak with us.  Not just practice, but an excuse to try night kayaking for free.  Believe me, you will have a blast.

3. Rain or shine - Adventure events happen rain or shine.  Be prepared and bring a clothing change for after the event

Update # 3

1. Plan to Carpool if possible.  This a low key event so we don't have the parking capacity of the bigger events.  Save the environment, minimize the parking impact and try to carpool with your teammate.

2. Kayak Practice -  Kayaking is fun but you should get some practice with your teammate prior to the event.  Some people have accussed the boats of having a mind of their own. :).  Here are the details. If you are interested in getting some kayaking practice, you are invited to join me for 2 free paddling sessions, every Wednesday at 6:45 pm at the Aquan Boat House (1097 Seal Court, San Mateo).  Kayak, PFD, and paddles are provided.  Cost is $0 for event participants until March 3.  Please RSVP (Hanijuha@gmail.com). Bring a base layer, a jacket, and a headlight.  Also bring a change of clothing

3. Standup Paddle Boading  - Yes, we may have some standup paddle boarding as part of the event.  This was a big hit last year.

4.  Will you need a compass?  No

5. Will you need to read a map? Yes, city street map and trail maps will be a part of this race.

Update #2

What is a "Rogaine"?  No, it is not to grow hair.  In adventure sports it describes an event  that lets the athletes decided which route and checkpoints they want to get.  More challenging checkpoints will have higher point values than easy to get checkpoints.  More importantly, the course is designed so that you CANNOT collect all possible checpoints.  That means that you have to make team decisions.

Maps -  Event maps will be emailed to you on March 5 at 10pm.  More details about the maps will be provided on March 6 prior to the event.

What should you wear? If it was me, I would wear my bicycle clothing and a small pack to carry my running shoes, water, and food.

Is this a relay?  No, you have to be within 100 feet of your teammate at all times.

What kind of bike is best for this event?  We have had people using mountain bikes, road bikes, cross bikes and hybrids.  We ask that you do not use motorcycles:)

Will rain cancel the event? No, this is an adventure.  So you just have to be more careful on the roads and make sure to brin extra clothing for the after party.

Kayak Practice -  Please refer to the January 19 update for details.  Rain does not cancel the kayak practice.  Please RSVP to hani@california-ara.com

Keep your questions coming.

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

You will receive weekly updates to help you get ready for the adventure.  Of course, if you have questions, you can email me.

1. The adventure will start and finish at the same location ( Aquan Sports), which means that there will be no transition areas.  If you are using road bike shoes, you will need to carry your running shoes with you for the trek( run, walk, jog). Stopping at a store to buy food and drinks is allowed.  So carry money

2. There will be more checkpoints than you can get in the 4 hour limit.  More difficult/ challenging checkpoints will have higher point value.  The goal is to get the most points in 4 hours.  That means that you and your team will have to make important decisions.

3. You will lose 10 points for every minute you exceed the 4 hour limit.

4. Team members must stay within 100 feet of each other at all times.  Breaking this rule will result in 100 point deduction.  This is not a relay.  It is a team event.

5. You will be paddling sit-on-top kayaks.  1 team per kayak.

Kayak Practice - If you are interested in getting some kayaking practice, you are invited to join me for 2 free paddling sessions, every Wednesday at 6:45 pm at the Aquan Boat House (1097 Seal Court, San Mateo).  Kayak, PFD, and paddles are provided.  Cost is $0 for event participants until March 3.  Please RSVP (Hanijuha@gmail.com). Bring a base layer, a jacket, and a headlight.  Also bring a change of clothing.

Note - The kayak practice location is also the location we will use for the kayak leg of the race.  So, you now have 2 of the three locations we will use for the race.  The final location will be emailed to you on Friday night before the event.
